The Bioremediation Facility at Klinkerstene Waste Park is an integral part of our holistic waste management offering. Dedicated to sustainable waste treatment, we apply natural microbial processes to remediate organic contaminants. By utilizing the windrow method, we create optimal conditions for microbial activity, ensuring efficient treatment of various waste types and minimizing environmental impact.

Waste Streams Handled:

Waste containing hydraulic oils, diesel, petrol, semi-volatile organic compounds (sVOC), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and even polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs as well as a host of other biodegradable / bio-available organic contaminants.

The effective treatment of such wastes through bioremediation require that appropriate environmental conditions are created in the windrowed wastes, in order to most optimally encourage the establishment and propagation of beneficial microbial populations.

Effluent Treatment Plant

The Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) represents a cornerstone of sustainable waste management at Interwaste. Engineered to the highest standards, our facility is designed to accept and treat various effluent waste streams, including leachate produced by our own facilities and liquid waste from diverse industries. With advanced technologies and meticulous processes, we ensure the effective treatment of liquid waste, recovering an impressive 80-90% as clean, reusable water.

The Klinkerstene Waste Park has a licensed waste treatment facility for waste stabilisation prior to landfill disposal. The facility handles various types of waste, from but not limited to, the commercial, industrial, mining and oil and gas sectors.

Klinkerstene Waste Park is at the forefront of innovative waste management solutions. Specializing in contaminant immobilisation, liquid and sludge waste stabilisation, and pH modification (including acid and alkaline waste neutralisation). Through the utilisation of advanced techniques, we ensure the safe containment of hazardous substances preventing their release into the environment.

Landfill Facility

The Landfill Facility at Klinkerstene Waste Park is a vital component of our waste management infrastructure, catering to the responsible disposal needs of a variety of waste types.

Our facility adheres to stringent regulations to ensure environmentally conscious waste management. The facility has the capacity to effectively manage and treat diverse waste types in strict accordance with legislative and local requirements. Our capabilities include targeted contaminant immobilisation through pre- treatment.

Waste Derived
Fuel Facility

Situated at our Germiston Hub, our Waste Derived Fuel Facility specialises in the transformation of diverse waste types into a secondary resource, notably a Waste Derived Fuel (WDF), a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels such as coal. We convert high calorific value (CV) wastes into thermal substitute fuel. This fuel significantly reduces carbon emissions and supports companies such as cement manufacturers, to decarbonise their operations, exemplifying our commitment to circular economy solutions and environmental protection.

Waste Handling

Waste types accepted for this process are typically certain types of hydrocarbon sludges and liquids with a high calorific value, such as, qualifying liquid and sludge wastes from the petro-chemical sector. This facility aims at ensuring the safe and responsible handling of waste and the achievement of a fuel specification demanded by specific off-takers. Some general considerations when determining the suitability of a waste type for this alternative fuel solution. These include:
