Mandela Day reminds us that meaningful change does not always begin with grand gestures. Often, it starts by recognising a need, responding to it, and working together to make a difference where it matters.

This Mandela Day, Interwaste partnered with Eskom to support the Sinqobile Disability Centre in Witbank through the donation of sanitary pads, helping provide young women and girls at the centre with access to an everyday essential that plays an important role in dignity, confidence and wellbeing.

Representatives from Interwaste and Eskom visited the centre to personally hand over the donation, spend time with beneficiaries and staff, and learn more about the important work taking place there.

Supporting dignity through practical action

Access to menstrual hygiene products is a basic need, yet it can present a very real challenge for women and girls without consistent access to these essentials.

For young women and girls living with disabilities, ensuring that this need is recognised and supported is particularly important. The donation to Sinqobile was therefore about more than providing sanitary products. It was about responding to a practical need in a way that supports dignity and wellbeing.

It is a simple intervention, but one with a very human impact.

Recognising the work of Sinqobile

At the heart of the initiative is the Sinqobile Disability Centre itself and the work it does to support people living with disabilities.

By providing an environment in which beneficiaries can develop their skills, independence and confidence, the centre plays an important role within its community. The Mandela Day visit created an opportunity not only to contribute to that work, but also to listen, engage and better understand the needs of those the centre supports.

It is this connection that gives initiatives such as these greater meaning.

Stronger communities are built together

For Interwaste, operating within communities brings with it a responsibility to contribute positively to the places and people around us.

Our partnership with Eskom for Mandela Day demonstrates what can be achieved when organisations bring their resources and relationships together in support of a shared purpose. While a single donation cannot address every challenge, it can respond to a real need and, importantly, remind people that they are seen and supported.

Nelson Mandela’s legacy continues to challenge South Africans to consider the difference we can make through service to others. It is a legacy that extends far beyond 67 minutes or a single day each year.

It lives in what we choose to do next.

At Interwaste, we believe that serving communities is part of serving the world around us. Through partnerships, practical action and a willingness to respond where we can make a meaningful difference, we can continue contributing to stronger, more inclusive communities.

As Nelson Mandela said:

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

No business operates in isolation.

Every day, materials leave factories, warehouses and production facilities having fulfilled their original purpose. For many organisations, that is where the story ends. At Interwaste, it is often where a new one begins.

A residual material from one manufacturer may become an alternative fuel powering another industry. A by-product once destined for disposal can be processed, blended and recovered to replace virgin fossil fuels. What appears to be waste is often simply a resource waiting for the right connection.

This is the essence of the circular economy. It is not simply about recycling more or sending less to landfill. It is about recognising that resources continue to hold value long after their original purpose has ended, provided there is a system capable of unlocking that value.

In an interconnected world, waste does not end with one business. It becomes part of another’s opportunity.

Moving Beyond the Linear Economy

For generations, industrial growth followed a predictable pattern: extract raw materials, manufacture products, consume them, and dispose of what remained.

While this linear model fuelled economic development, it also created increasing pressure on finite resources, landfill capacity and the environment. Valuable materials were routinely discarded, despite retaining significant energy or resource potential.

Today’s environmental challenges demand a different way of thinking.

The circular economy challenges businesses to ask a simple question: What value still remains?

Instead of viewing residual materials as an unavoidable cost of doing business, circular systems seek to recover, repurpose and reconnect them to new applications.

This shift changes waste from an endpoint into a resource capable of supporting entirely new value chains.

Creating Connections Through Resource Recovery

One of the greatest barriers to circularity is not a lack of resources. It is a lack of connection.

Industries frequently generate materials that no longer serve a purpose within their own operations. At the same time, other industries are actively seeking alternative fuel sources and recovered materials that reduce both environmental impact and reliance on virgin resources.

Connecting these opportunities requires more than collection. It requires technical expertise, quality assurance and an understanding of how different waste streams can safely create value elsewhere.

This is where integrated waste management becomes an enabler of circularity.

Rather than asking where waste should be disposed of, the focus shifts to where it can contribute next.

Connecting Industries Through RDF

One of the clearest examples of this interconnected approach is Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF).

Not every material can be recycled back into its original form. However, many residual waste streams still contain significant embedded energy. Through careful characterisation, processing and blending, these materials can be transformed into a consistent alternative fuel suitable for energy-intensive industries such as cement manufacturing.

Interwaste’s blending platform is designed to create these new connections.

Residual materials from multiple industries are assessed, processed and blended to produce alternative fuels that meet strict quality and performance requirements. Materials that might otherwise occupy valuable landfill airspace instead continue their journey within the economy, replacing traditional fossil fuels in industrial processes.

The outcome is far greater than waste diversion.

One industry’s residual material becomes another industry’s energy solution.

This is circularity in practice – not simply moving waste, but creating an entirely new value chain that benefits both businesses and the environment.

Circularity Depends on Trust

These connections do not happen by chance.

Industrial circularity depends on confidence that recovered materials are safe, consistent and fit for purpose. Every new recovery pathway relies on rigorous assessment, regulatory compliance and strong partnerships between waste producers, processors and end users.

Trust is built through:

Accurate waste characterisation

Consistent quality assurance

Responsible processing and blending

Full traceability across the value chain

Long-term collaboration between industries

Without these foundations, circular systems cannot function effectively.

Interwaste’s role extends beyond managing waste. It is about managing the complexity that allows materials to move safely and confidently between industries, ensuring value is retained at every possible stage.

Industries Are Part of the Same System

Circularity is often discussed as an environmental objective, but it is equally an economic one.

When businesses share resources more effectively, they reduce dependence on virgin materials, strengthen supply chains and improve resilience against resource constraints. Every successful recovery pathway creates value beyond the individual organisation, supporting broader industrial efficiency while reducing environmental pressure.

Just as rivers connect landscapes and ecosystems connect biodiversity, industries are connected through the movement of resources.

Recognising these relationships allows businesses to become active participants in a system where waste is no longer viewed as an unavoidable by-product, but as a resource capable of supporting future growth.

Throughout this series, we have explored how waste connects to water, soil, biodiversity, health and our oceans. This month reminds us that these are not the only connections that matter.

Industries are interconnected too.

Every manufacturer, recycler, processor and energy user forms part of a larger system where materials continue creating value long after their original purpose has ended.

Interwaste’s role is to make those connections possible – linking businesses, technologies and recovery pathways so that waste is viewed not as an endpoint, but as the beginning of something new.

Because a circular economy is not built by individual organisations.

It is built by the connections between them.

Within the Interwaste Group, our commitment to serving land and life extends beyond waste management – it is about making a tangible difference in the communities where we operate. A recent initiative at our Moz-Environmental Subsidiary with our team at the Pemba Depot, and in partnership with Reef Investimentos LDA, reflects this dedication to environmental responsibility and community well-being.

Addressing a Community Need

The Metula community, located near our Pemba depot, reached out for assistance in clearing an unmanaged waste site that had become a growing concern for public health and environmental sustainability. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, our Moz-Env EXCO team approved the project, working closely with the Mayor of Pemba, Mr. Satar Abdulgani, and local community leaders to ensure a coordinated and effective cleanup effort.

Executing a Large-Scale Cleanup

The cleanup took place on 10th and 11th February 2025, with resources mobilized to efficiently remove accumulated waste. This effort included:

4 x 18m³ tipper trucks and a front-end loader, provided at no rental cost by Reef Investimentos.

Moz-Env managing fuel supply, supervision, and liaising with local authorities to ensure smooth execution.

30 x 18m³ loads of waste removed and disposed of at the Pemba municipality landfill.

Beyond Waste Removal: A Sustainable Commitment

While the immediate focus was on clearing the waste, our engagement with the Metula community goes further. Poor waste management poses serious risks, including pollution, disease outbreaks, and compromised quality of life – issues that require long-term solutions.

To ensure continued environmental improvements, we have committed to:

Installing two permanent skip bins in the area for controlled waste disposal.

Scheduling bi-weekly collections to prevent further illegal dumping and maintain a cleaner environment.

It’s Women’s Month – and Interwaste is celebrating the launch of its Give2Green initiative.

Women’s Month is a month where we not only highlight the triumphs of women but take stock of the barriers that they still face. In fact, our own Government has stated that Women’s Month allows us to gauge how far we have come in transforming the unequal power relations between men and women and creating a conducive environment to enable women to take control of their lives.

And we agree.

Every company should use this month as an opportunity to examine how they can facilitate socio-economic upliftment, to make a collective difference. This is a challenge that Interwaste has examined. We have focused on how we continue to remain true to our core, by focusing on driving recycling and waste management issues in South Africa, but also to provide a sustainable approach to some of the key issues facing women. In line with this, we are pleased to launch our Give2Green initiative this month.

The Give2Green initiative, which still focuses on the recycling element, now gives consumers, and companies the option of either donating sanitary pads or wheelchairs to those that need it the most. It is an adaption of our already well received Tops & Tags programme – where since 2011, we asked individuals, communities and corporates to bring in recyclable goods that could be used as a donation towards a wheelchair for those in need. A programme that saw us donate over 1 000 wheelchairs to worthy recipients as well as divert over 400 tons of waste from landfill disposal.Give2Green is the next evolutionary step in this journey.

We really want to focus on promoting women’s health, education, and empowerment to improve the lives of women and girls in our country and part of this journey means also addressing a very basic human right – access. Today, far too many women, and girls, lack access to sanitary pads, which, we know can lead to absenteeism in schools, and at work, and this can affect education and income generating activities. In fact, I Menstruate, an organisation that is focuses on these issues has stated that today 83% of girl learners do not have regular access to menstrual hygiene products at school and at home. We hope to make a difference here – and believe that collectively, we can provide the access that is so very much needed.

So please join us on this journey as we try to help remove this barrier for so many women and allow them to allocate their limited resources to other much needed necessities.
